Watch City Steampunk Festival in Waltham May 11-13 [Apr. 25th, 2012|10:38 pm]
Waltham, Massachusetts

radegund_lj
The Charles River Museum of Industry and Innovation is once again sponsoring the Watch City Festival, a celebration of all things "steampunk". The event will take place in downtown Waltham, mostly along Moody Street and the Common. Events kick off Friday night with a party at the Watch City Brewery featuring author Jean-Christophe Valtat and bands Infernal Devices and Frenchy & the Punk. Then Saturday and Sunday the festival will be in full swing all day long with panels, performances, films, authors, vendors, parties, hot air balloons, mermaids, and wacky fun. Some venues require the purchase of a festival button to get into; sales of the buttons go to support the museum, which is still recovering from a flood a couple of years ago.

A 2-for-1 Groupon is available for the next 3 days: http://www.groupon.com/deals/charles-river-museum-of-industry-innovation

RTN Credit Union? [Oct. 9th, 2011|12:53 pm]
Waltham, Massachusetts

jenwrites
I'm thinking of moving my money out of BoA and into the RTN Credit Union (provided I'm still eligible -- my company was bought by another company about a year ago, and the old company name is on their list of eligible members, but not the new one). Does anyone here have experience with them that they'd be willing to share? Feel free to send it in a private message if you don't want to make it public.

Thanks!

International Steampunk City -- Revised URL [Apr. 18th, 2011|08:12 am]
Waltham, Massachusetts

radegund_lj
Sorry to re-post this message, but the URL for this event has changed and I'm trying to get the word out. The new URL is listed below.

The Charles River Museum of Industry and Innovation's second annual Steampunk festival has become The International Steampunk City, and they really will be taking over the city of Waltham! On the weekend of May 6-8 you may encounter Victorian dancers, high-wheel bicyclers, time travelers, steam engines, mad scientists, musicians, antiques, and far more at a variety of locations across the city. Some events will be free to the public; others will require the purchase of a button to enter. All proceeds go to benefit the museum, which is still recovering from last year's flooding.

Visit http://internationalsteampunkcitywaltham.org/ and http://www.crmi.org/ for more information.

Daily News Tribune makes major changes [Jul. 7th, 2010|02:12 pm]
Waltham, Massachusetts

elizabear
1) Beginning Aug 31, the paper will only be published Tuesdays and Fridays.
2) The paper will be called the "Waltham News Tribune", and will drop coverage of Newton.
3) The latest local news and sports developments will continue to be available at the newspaper's website, WickedLocalWaltham.com.

I don't know if this will work. I liked them having to fill space by highlighting local events and positive news. We'll have to see what happens, but I rely on them for most of my local news and I'm not happy about them dropping to 2x week vs 5x.

Steampunk Festival [Mar. 8th, 2010|08:34 pm]
Waltham, Massachusetts

[UPDATE: Due to needing some cleanup time at the museum after the recent flooding, the Steampunk Festival has been moved to a new date, May 1st.]

The Charles River Museum of Industry in Waltham is hosting a Steampunk Festival on Saturday, May 1st from 10:00am-4:00pm. "Steampunk" is a science fiction genre heavily influenced by the Victorian era -- think H.G. Wells and Jules Verne, steam engines, airships and ray guns. There will be artists, dancers, authors, costume and prop makers, and lessons and displays on all things steampunk, hosted in a museum that focuses on the area's early industrial history.
